The lines running from the corners of the mouth down toward the chin affect expression more than their size suggests. They arise from the interplay of volume loss, muscular pull, and declining tissue firmness.

Mechanism

How the treatment works

Hyaluronic acid is placed deeply beside the chin and along the course of the line. It replaces the lost support and thereby reduces the downward pull on the mouth corner. Since the depressor anguli oris muscle also acts here, it is often assessed whether an additional botulinum toxin treatment makes sense.

Procedure

After analysis of the lower face and local anaesthesia, volume is usually placed with a blunt cannula to spare the tissue. Chin and jawline are assessed alongside, as they co-determine the course of the line. The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes.

Aftercare

Cooling as needed, no massage of the treated area, no sports, sauna, or tanning for 48 hours.

Risks and side effects

Swelling, redness, and bruising are possible in the first few days. Rarely, nodules, asymmetry, or inflammation occur. Very rarely, vascular occlusion can occur.

Contraindications

Not suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in the presence of infection or inflammatory skin conditions in the treatment area, with known hypersensitivity to components of the product, or with certain autoimmune conditions.

Is the chin treated at the same time?

Often, yes. Marionette lines, chin contour, and jawline form one anatomical unit. Considering the line in isolation often falls short of what is achievable. Whether to extend the treatment is discussed in the consultation, never assumed.
