The fold between the nostril and the corner of the mouth rarely originates where it becomes visible. It is often the consequence of volume loss higher up in the cheek — which is why treatment does not always begin in the fold itself.

Mechanism

How the treatment works

Assessment first establishes how much of the fold results from missing cheek volume and how much from the fold itself. Where support is lacking higher up, that area is built first — the fold already flattens as a result. If a remainder persists, hyaluronic acid is placed carefully and deeply along the fold itself.

Procedure

The treatment procedure

After seated analysis and local anaesthesia, filling is performed with a blunt cannula or needle, depending on region and depth. Dosing is deliberately restrained, with follow-up if needed, rather than placing too much in one session. The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes.

Aftercare

Cooling as needed, no massage of the treated area, no sports, sauna, or tanning for 48 hours.

Risks and side effects

Swelling, redness, and bruising are possible in the first few days. Rarely, nodules, asymmetry, or inflammation occur. Very rarely, vascular occlusion can occur — the area beside the nostril is among the anatomically more demanding zones and requires corresponding experience.

Contraindications

Not suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in the presence of infection or inflammatory skin conditions in the treatment area, with known hypersensitivity to components of the product, or with certain autoimmune conditions.

Why is the cheek sometimes treated instead of the fold?

Because the fold is often only the visible result of volume loss higher up. Filling the fold alone while the support above it is missing can make the area look heavy. Treating the cause usually gives a more natural result with less material.

Will the fold disappear completely?

Complete smoothing is neither realistic nor the goal. The nasolabial fold is part of normal facial anatomy and is visible in everyone when smiling. What is treated is its etched depth at rest, not the fold as such.
