Sweating of the Underarms and Forehead

Some people sweat so heavily that daily life suffers — medicine calls this hyperhidrosis. For others it is the soaked shirt in a meeting or a damp forehead before a presentation. The treatment is the same in both cases: it prevents the activity of the sweat glands in the treated area for months.

With pronounced hyperhidrosis a medical indication applies, and relieving the symptoms comes first. Treatment is equally possible where sweating is not pathological but is experienced as a burden in everyday life. Billing is private — treatments cannot be settled through Swiss basic health insurance.

Indications

What this treatment is suited for

  • Wet underarms showing through clothing
  • A damp forehead in meetings or before speaking
  • Sweating of the hands or feet
  • Diagnosed hyperhidrosis limiting daily life
  • Sweating experienced as a burden without a pathological finding

Mechanism

How the treatment works

Targeted modulation of nerve signals to the sweat glands significantly normalizes local perspiration for many months.

Procedure

The treatment procedure

After determining the affected area (optionally using an iodine-starch test), numerous small, superficial injections are placed across the entire region. The treatment takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Aftercare

After the treatment

No particular restrictions. Exercise and sauna should be avoided on the day of treatment.

Risks and side effects

Mild redness or tenderness at the injection sites is possible. For hand treatment, rarely a temporary reduction in grip strength.

Contraindications

Not suitable for certain neuromuscular disorders, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or in the presence of infections in the treatment area.

Questions about the treatment

Frequently asked questions

Does my sweating have to be pathological for you to treat it?

No. Hyperhidrosis is a diagnosis with clear criteria: sweating far beyond what temperature regulation calls for, with a noticeable limitation in daily life. Anyone who simply does not want a wet shirt in a meeting usually does not meet those criteria — and can still be treated. Method, dosing, and safety are the same. What we will not do is record a diagnosis that does not apply.

How long does the effect last?

Depending on the body region, the effect typically lasts 6 to 9 months, often longest in the underarms.
