Polynucleotides

Polynucleotides are regenerative biostimulators made from highly purified DNA fragments that stimulate cell renewal, boost collagen and elastin production, and bind moisture deep within the skin. They also provide antioxidant protection, neutralise free radicals and can reduce UV damage. They create no volume — what is treated is the quality of the skin, which makes them particularly suited to thin and delicate areas such as the eye region.

Mechanism

How the treatment works

Cell regeneration & tissue building

In the dermis the DNA fragments act as a signal to the fibroblasts, which respond by forming more collagen and elastin. The skin gradually gains density and firmness; fine lines, shadows under the eyes, irregularities and small scars soften over the following weeks.

Hydration at depth

The same fragments bind water in the deeper layers of the dermis. That depot effect lasts — the skin stays more supple than surface care can achieve.

Cell protection & anti-inflammatory action

Their antioxidant properties neutralise free radicals and temper inflammatory processes. This can reduce environmental and UV-related stress and makes irritated or over-sensitive skin more treatable.

Because the preparation is neither cross-linked nor volumising, it does not change contour — not even where the skin is very thin.

Procedure

The treatment procedure

After cleansing and applying a numbing cream, the product is distributed across the treatment area in many small, superficial depots. In the eye region this is done with particular restraint and close attention to the structures beneath. For the best results, two to three sessions two to four weeks apart are recommended. A session takes approximately 30 minutes.

Aftercare

After the treatment

No make-up for twelve hours, no sports, sauna, or tanning for 48 hours, and consistent sun protection in the following days. Small bumps at the injection points usually settle within a day.

Risks and side effects

Small bumps, redness, and pinpoint bruising at the injection sites are common and short-lived. In the eye area bruising can remain visible somewhat longer, as the skin there is especially thin. Rarely, swelling lasting several days or inflammation occurs.

Contraindications

Not suitable with a known allergy to fish or seafood, as the products used are derived from purified fish DNA. Also not suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in the presence of infection or inflammatory skin conditions in the treatment area, or with certain autoimmune conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What are polynucleotides made of?

Highly purified DNA fragments obtained from fish and refined through several purification steps. With a known fish or seafood allergy the treatment is therefore not suitable — please raise this during your consultation.

How does this differ from a hyaluronic acid treatment such as Profhilo®?

Profhilo® works with hyaluronic acid and acts mainly through water binding. Polynucleotides also bind moisture but additionally have a regenerating and calming effect on the tissue. With very thin or irritated skin, particularly under the eye, the choice therefore often falls on polynucleotides.
